Artist bio
Much of Kay’s creative process begins in daydreams, where wildlife, storytelling, and a hint of steampunk effortlessly intertwine. Her approach is fluid and intuitive - rarely does a piece end the way it began. Ideas shift and evolve organically and that sense of discovery is what makes digital painting so exciting for her.
Kay builds her imagery from her own photography, blending steampunk inspired scenes with animal characters captured through her personal wildlife work. Through digital compositing and painting, she breathes life into these characters, aiming to evoke laughter, wonder, and a sense of connection.
She pursued formal training in Computer Graphic Design at Auckland University of Technology and worked in the graphic industry. Although digital painting differs from traditional canvas work, the foundation remains the same: years of practice, patience, mastery of brushwork and a balance of creativity and technical skill. Using Photoshop, a digital tablet, and a stylus pen, she constructs each artwork layer by layer; adjusting colour and lighting, refining composition, blending elements and adding intricate brushstrokes.
These experiences continually push her to explore new techniques, push boundaries and refine her artistic voice.
